In terms of musical style Justin Mills has always kept all options open, ‘eclectic’ is the word most often used to describe his sets, he puts this down to having been a regular listener all through his teens to John Peel’s BBC late night radio show. He was playing drums and percussion in two bands while at art school in Bristol in the eighties, absorbing the rise of the local reggae and trip-hop sound during the British rave scene of that time.
He was then introduced to an entirely different kind of music when he lived for three years in Santiniketan, India where he grew to love the complex rhythms and melodies of classical Indian music, and the drumming of the local Santali tribes.
In 1996 he came to live in Thailand and in 2004 he mixed a new soundtrack for the film ‘Koyaanisqatsi’. This new version, with a diverse range of music including tracks by Nitin Sawhney, Underworld, Radiohead, Tom Waits, Young Disciples, Peshay, Moloko, and DJ Craze, was screened in Bangkok’s legendary Bed Supperclub with Mills mixing the soundtrack live, thus beginning his residency at one of Asia’s best nightclubs.
Since then he has been playing in clubs all over south east Asia with many regular residencies in Bangkok, mixing up a wide range of styles from Funk, Soul, Jazz and Hip-Hop to Nu-disco, House, and Bass Music.
Resident DJ in some of the best and trendiest spots of Bangkok, we are happy to have Justin Mills for a special set of Nu-Blues and Nu-Funk delights by the river!
